Mixing these stages in the same physical space leads to chaos, ruined projects, and safety hazards. Designing the studio requires dividing the floor plan into three distinct, dedicated zones: the wet zone, the dry zone, and the firing zone.

The wet zone is the highest-traffic area of the studio. This section houses the pottery wheels, wedging tables, and hand-building benches. Because clay dust travels easily, placing these activities near water sources is essential. Wedging tables, constructed from sturdy wood and topped with canvas or plaster, should sit adjacent to the wheels so potters can prepare clay and immediately sit down to throw.

The dry zone is dedicated to storage and decoration. This area needs extensive shelving to hold greenware, which is unfired, fragile clay, and bisque ware, which has been fired once and is ready for glaze. Keeping these shelves far away from the wet wheels prevents accidental splashes from ruining dry pieces. The dry zone also includes a clean glaze station equipped with tables for painting, dipping, or pouring glazes onto bisque items.

The firing zone is the final destination and requires isolation. This area holds the kilns, which generate immense heat and fumes. For safety and climate control, this zone must be physically separated from the main workspace, ideally in a locked room or an enclosed corner with heavy-duty ventilation.

The pottery wheel is the centerpiece of the studio. Alongside specialized plumbing, the wet zone needs a dedicated clay recycling station. Pottery production generates a massive amount of scrap material from trimming and failed attempts. A recycling station featuring large plastic buckets for slaking down dry scraps, paired with large plaster bats to draw out excess moisture, allows the club to reprocess old clay and save significant money on material costs.

Safety, Ventilation, and Air QualitySafety is the most critical element of any student-run studio. Clay contains silica, and when clay dries, it turns into a fine dust. Breathing in silica dust over long periods can cause serious respiratory issues. Therefore, sweeping with a dry broom should be strictly banned in the studio. Instead, the club space must adopt a strict “wet clean only” policy, where surfaces and floors are wiped down daily with wet sponges and mops.

Ventilation is another crucial consideration, especially around the kiln and glaze areas. Kilns emit carbon monoxide and sulfur fumes during a firing, requiring a dedicated, powered exhaust system that vents directly outside the building. Glaze stations also require proper air circulation, and members must wear respirators when mixing dry glaze powders to prevent inhaling toxic chemicals.
